Obalon Gastric Balloon in the Inland Empire
The first FDA-approved swallowable gastric balloon to help you eat less and lose weight quickly.
Losing weight is not always as simple as “calories in, calories out.” Everyone is different, and diet and exercise alone don’t work for everyone, especially if you’re feeling hungry all the time. If traditional weight loss methods aren’t successful for you, it may be time to consider a different approach—and that doesn’t have to mean surgery.
We are proud to offer the Obalon gastric balloon at Surgical Arts of the Inland Empire. The first and only FDA-approved swallowable gastric balloon, Obalon offers a truly minimally invasive solution to help you feel full faster, eat less, and start losing weight within days.
What is Obalon?
Obalon is a non-surgical, fully reversible gastric balloon system that helps you lose weight by taking up space in your stomach, so you eat less. During a six-month treatment course, you will swallow three vitamin-sized, capsule-shaped balloons, which are inflated by your doctor. With these balloons in place, you will get full much more quickly and feel full for longer.
Unlike other gastric balloons, Obalon does not require an invasive procedure to place and there is little to no downtime required after each balloon placement.
Benefits of Obalon:
- No sedation or endoscopy required to place the balloons
- Balloon placement takes about 10 to 15 minutes; removal takes only 20 minutes
- Most patients require zero downtime
- You can keep eating the foods you like—you’ll just eat less
- It’s easy to keep the procedure private
- Obalon balloons can be removed easily at any time
- Treatment includes professional support to help you adopt diet and lifestyle changes
Clinically proven to facilitate long-term weight loss
Even though Obalon is only in your stomach for six months, the weight loss benefits can continue for years. In clinical studies performed by Obalon, patients kept off an average of 89% of the weight they lost with Obalon a full year after they began treatment. Not only that, but patients who received Obalon plus lifestyle counseling lost twice as much weight as a control group who were prescribed diet and exercise alone.
How does Obalon treatment work?
Obalon balloons are placed during a series of three monthly regular, in-office appointments. You will swallow one balloon per visit. Each balloon is about the size of a multi-vitamin and attached to a string-like tube. After you swallow the balloon, we will take an X-ray to make sure it is in the right place. Then, your doctor will inflate the balloon with gas, via the tube, until it is about the size of an orange. The tube is then taken out through your mouth.
Once inflated, the balloons can move freely within your stomach. You may notice them in there for a few days, but soon all you’ll notice is that you are not as hungry! You will also be given a personalized diet and exercise program—it’s important to follow this plan to maximize your weight loss and feel your very best during and after Obalon.
Six months after your first Obalon treatment, you will have the balloons removed. This short procedure requires light sedation—you will be awake but relaxed. Your doctor will place a long, thin endoscope through your mouth, deflate the balloons, and carefully remove them. Removing all three balloons takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
Am I a good candidate?
Obalon can be a safe, effective weight loss aid for moderately overweight patients who have not succeeded with diet and exercise alone. It is not a “cure” for obesity, nor is it a substitute for bariatric surgery. However, receiving Obalon could help you gain control of your weight and health before surgery becomes necessary. The optimal candidates for Obalon:
- Are moderately overweight (30 or more lbs. above their optimal body weight)
- Have a BMI of 30 to 40
- Have been unsuccessful in losing weight through diet and exercise
- Are committed to long-term lifestyle changes during and after Obalon treatment
What are the risks?
When performed by a qualified medical professional, Obalon is a safe, effective weight loss procedure for the right candidates. Serious side effects are extremely rare. The most common side effects are temporary nausea and abdominal pain during the first few days after the balloon is placed.
During your Obalon treatment, you will be able to eat what you like, but you will feel full much more quickly than before. You will not be allowed to take NSAIDs, such as Advil, Motrin, Aleve or generic ibuprofen or naproxen while the balloons are in place, as these may damage the balloons. We will discuss the possible risks and considerations with you during your consultation.
